To Kill a Mockingbird: Important Characters

Hello ladies,

Reference this page to help you keep track of the important characters in To Kill a Mockingbird.  Check often as I will update this page as we meet new characters in our reading!

Important to remember:
 Scout Finch (Jean Louise)  is the NARRATOR.
 At the start of the novel, she is about 6 years old.


Important to remember:
 Jem Finch is Scout's older brother. 


Important to remember:
Atticus Finch is Scout and Jem's father. 
He is a well-respected lawyer in Maycomb.

Important to Remember:
Boo's real name is Arthur Radley.
 No one has seen Boo for 15+ years.
As a result, both children AND adults imagine all sorts of scary things that Boo does at night when everyone is sleeping. 
No one knows for sure, however, what Boo's deal is.

Important to remember:
Calpurinia (Cal) works for the Finches as their cook. 
She is also like a mother to Scout and Jem in many ways.
 She DOES NOT live with the Finches.
Important to remember:
 Dill was not raised in Maycomb and only visits in the summer. 
He is best friends with Scout and Jem.

 
Important to Remember:
Neighbor of Jem & Scout.
Treats Jem, Scout, and Dill like mature, young adults.
Doesn't really care what anyone thinks of her; she knows she's her own woman.
 

Important to Remember:
Accused of raping Mayella Ewell.
Husband to Helen Robinson.
Calpurnia describes him as "good, clean folk."
 

Important to Remember:
Atticus says his family "lives like animals."
Live at the town dump.
Doesn't work; lives off of welfare.
Uses welfare checks to buy alcohol - he is an alcoholic.
Neglects his children.
